And the mountains going to shout amen!

An American, living in Newfoundland, calling in to CBC yesterday, weeping:

Yunno? Mr. Bush was so damn mean.
Mr. Obama is so damn kind!

Yeah, Mr. America, I and the world applaud you and your voting brothers and sisters!

Thanks to you, our tiny little planet now has hope.

And our Leonard Cohen sums it up, oh so well.....

Its coming through a hole in the air
]from those nights in tiananmen square
Its coming from the feel
That it aint exactly real
Or its real, but it aint exactly there
]from the wars against disorder
]from the sirens night and day
]from the fires of the homeless
]from the ashes of the gay
Democracy is coming to the u.s.a.

Its coming through a crack in the wall
On a visionary flood of alcohol
]from the staggering account
Of the sermon on the mount
Which I dont pretend to understand at all
Its coming from the silence
On the dock of the bay
]from the brave, the bold, the battered
Heart of chevrolet
Democracy is coming to the u.s.a.

Its coming from the sorrow on the street
The holy places where the races meet
]from the homicidal bitchin
That goes down in every kitchen
To determine who will serve and who will eat
]from the wells of disappointment
Where the women kneel to pray
For the grace of God in the desert here
And the desert far away
Democracy is coming to the u.s.a.

Chorus
Sail on, sail on
O mighty ship of state!
To the shores of need
Past the reefs of greed
Through the squalls of hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on...

Its coming to america first
The cradle of the best and of the worst
Its here they got the range
And the machinery for change
And its here they got the spiritual thirst
Its here the familys broken
And its here the lonely say
That the heart has got to open
In a fundamental way
Democracy is coming to the u.s.a.

Its coming from the women and the men
O baby, well be making love again
Well be going down so deep
That the rivers going to weep
And the mountains going to shout amen!
Its coming like the tidal flood
Beneath the lunar sway
Imperial, mysterious
In amorous array
Democracy is coming to the u.s.a.

Chorus

Im sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I cant stand the scene
And Im neither left or right
Im just staying home tonight
Getting lost in that hopeless little screen
But Im stubborn as those garbage bags
That time cannot decay
Im junk but Im still holding up
This little wild bouquet
Democracy is coming to the u.s.a

PS (posted later) And my good friend Nick, in his comments, points to this well written and funny column in The Times by Martin Samuel. All about black guys having to clean up the white guys' messes. LOL.

  1. A stunning majority for Barack Obama, now let's hope he can deliver on that potential everyone sees in him. Whatever else, he's already given people who're black and of mixed race a huge boost in confidence, knowing that their skin colour doesn't have to hold them back in life.

  3. I haven't been this excited about an election in my life. It just meant more for the reason that the words hope and change came at such a time when it's most needed by a man who at least sounds like he believes in it and had the power to create a gigantic circle of believers around him. Looking at his background, helping the poor and the hopeless, the community work he has done, I believe him too.
At least he doesn't have a CV that reads, "It's a family business. My father was a shit politician, my father's father was a shit politician. We had loads of money and pretty much exploited everything and everyone on our way. Elect me, elect me!"
Best of luck to him and all the Americans who voted for him in implementing change.
My biggest fear is for his life actually. I am afraid of the fanatics, the people haters, the racists.
I hope America protects him well.

  5. Isn't this wonderful fantastic amazing glorious stunning wonderful wonderful wonderful?!! I feel so proud to be an American, and I haven't felt that in a long time, certainly not in the last 8 years. My prayers every night have been for his and his family's safety. Let us wrap him in love and protection as he enters this time of worldwide recognition and as he works to effect the change we so desperately need.

  6. @ Nick
Isn't it just grand to be in the moment with the Americans who have taken their country back? Whatever Obama does.
    @ Irene:
If nothing else, Irene, Americans have regained self-respect.
    @ Gaye
Yes, me too. A wise old fisherman on CBC said yesterday that these attempted/successful asassinations take place every 20 years in the states since Lincoln. I've yet to check it out.
    @ T:
it is one of Leonard's amazing songs, are you familiar with him? I think you'd very much enjoy one of his albums, T. Check him out at the library to see?
    @ Verna:
Yes, so many American citizens were talking of moving this time if McCain got in. We are all proud of Americans too and want to say: welcome back from the darkness!

  9. The link is: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/martin_samuel/article5101741.ece

If that doesn't work go to The Times/Columnists/Martin Samuel and it's the first item.

The premise is wonderful - ole whitey has left the country in one hell of a mess and the black guy's been called in to clear it all up.
